The problem

Some of the most expensive NHS conversations are the ones that never happen.

The concern that goes unsaid on a ward round. The performance conversation a new team leader keeps putting off. The challenge to a senior colleague that a quieter voice never quite makes. Behind so much of what shows up later as patient safety incidents, grievance casework, long-term absence and attrition is something simpler: a conversation that didn’t happen or didn’t go well.

What this costs NHS teams

01

HR and leadership caseload

Fact-finds that should take days take months. Documentation piles up. Relationships break down before anyone has had the real conversation.

02

Absenteeism costs

Mental health is now the leading reason for absence, but it often masks domestic abuse, racism, family breakdown, financial pressure and burnout. The label hides the real conversation.

03

The agency risk

Staff go off sick because they don’t feel able to ask for a different shift, raise a concern, or say they are struggling. Avoidance becomes absence.

04

Unregulated AI in the gap

Your staff are already turning to ChatGPT and other unregulated tools to script difficult conversations, prepare grievances and process workplace distress. This is happening now, with no governance, no NHS context and no audit trail.

Why this matters now

If we don’t reach issues in the first three weeks, they tend to become long-term absence, formal cases, or someone leaving.

The NHS People Promise asks us to be a place where staff feel safe, supported and able to speak up. That promise lives or dies in everyday conversations.

BraverTalk is based on the frameworks and models used within the HSJ award-winning Braver than Before programme. It helps staff name what’s happening, find their words, prepare for the conversation, anticipate the response, and reflect afterwards. Built on the BRAVE framework and anchored to NHS values. A practical, ethical, NHS-shaped reinforcement layer for the cultural change your work is already trying to deliver.
